What to see in Cologne
Cologne is one of the oldest cities in Germany with a pretty rich history. It has been called the epitome of vitality. Tourists flock to Cologne because they know they will find art, culture, delicious food, quaint architecture and much more. Cologne sits on the banks of the river Rhine, which adds to its charm.
Historic highlights
Cologne was founded in 50 AD. Interestingly enough, the Romans were responsible for its founding. You can find evidence of this in the remnants of Roman civilization in the form of churches, houses, and other architectural objects within the city. And there are also many documents in Cologne’s museums that tell of Roman rule over the area.
Today Cologne is a city of contrasts. Alongside its historical monuments, there are objects from the Middle Ages and the beginning of the 18th and 19th centuries. At the same time there is a lot of modern buildings, and museums have a variety of collections of artifacts.

Top places to eat are the Alter Markt and Heumarkt squares. There are also excellent restaurants and pubs in the historical centre. The locals’ attitude adds colour. They’re hospitable and eager to share stories and legends.

There are plenty of parks throughout the city, as well as venues for festivals and fairs. You can get to your destinations by public transport in the form of taxis, trams, buses, and in some cases even by cable car.
Suburbs
Cologne is a German metropolis that is always loud and lively. If that doesn’t appeal, you can head to its suburbs. It is quieter there and a bit more picturesque. For example you can visit Bruhl Palace, which was built in the 18th century. The building impresses with its Baroque and Rococo interiors.
It is surrounded by an incredible park designed by Le Nôtre’s apprentice who was responsible for the creation of the Versailles Park. You can stroll through the dense trees, enjoy the magnificent flowerbeds and appreciate the original landscaping.
