Göttingen, Germany: things to see, do and eat

A small town called Göttingen is situated in the southern part of Lower Saxony. It has a quintessentially German flair, enhanced by student life. The student population is predominantly student-dominated, which is why the city is always lively and lively.

Highlights

Gettingen is called a university city for a reason. While there aren’t many landmarks, there is one in particular. This is the Georg Augustus University, which has been in existence since 1734.

It is renowned for its talented graduates. More than 40 students who went on to become Nobel laureates received their knowledge within its walls. The most famous alumni were the Brothers Grimm, who produced many iconic fairy tales.

Another speciality is the Göttingen restaurant scene. The city has many different kinds of restaurants, but there are four that are a must. They are restaurants such as:

• Gauss;
• Myer’s;
• Junkerschanke;
• Einstein.

Each is characterised by a special atmosphere, original design, delicious food and a reasonable price policy. We recommend getting to know them as well as the city itself during the summer or Christmas season. Getttingen is even more colourful and full of events.

Attractions

The small town still has a few surprising sights to see. First of all, head for the Market Square, which is home to the fountain called the “Lisa and the Geese”. It was built in 1901. Amusingly, the girl depicted is considered the “most kissed woman” in town. Graduates love to climb her and kiss her on the cheek.

A walk to the Old Town Hall is also recommended. Its construction dates back to 1270. It once housed merchants’ guilds. Inside, the building is impressive in its design with frescos bearing the coats of arms of the Hanseatic cities.

Other places to visit are the Bismarck Tower, the Berner House or the Church of St. Johannes. The latter has two towers, which are quite different from each other. One once served as a classroom for students.

If you want to enjoy some quiet time alone with nature, you can go to Schillerwiese Park or Göttingen Forest. Both of these places are spectacularly beautiful. Beech and oak trees, as well as a variety of fauna are present in the forest. Schillerwiese Park is busier.

Despite its small size, Göttingen has something to surprise and enthrall. Its uniqueness and incomparable charm keep you coming back again and again if you can’t stay here permanently. But of course, the settlement won’t appeal to those who are used to a quieter, more sedate life. Student parties, festivals and other events are usually held here on a grand scale.
