Aachen: Where Germany meets Belgium and the Netherlands!

Aachen is another original German city that will not leave anyone indifferent. It is located in the north of the state and is famous for its resorts. But its main specialty is the fact that it lies at the junction of three countries – Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. In addition, it is also an economic region, which is called Evrigio.

Features of the city

Aachen is predominantly built in the style of the Middle Ages. There are some modern elements and details that were formed here in other eras. The settlement itself is small but colourful. It’s decorated with original buildings that have exquisite decorations. Some of them have sharp spires. There are gothic style buildings with baroque elements.

The streets are quite narrow but picturesque. From time to time you can step out onto a pretty fountain. Aachen’s main attraction is its lavishly decorated gates. The combination of different styles makes the city really unique. The addition of modern details adds to the charm.

As the settlement is not so large, it is quite possible to take a guided walking tour. But this is for those who love long walks. The city is accessible via Maastricht Aachen Airport, 40 kilometres away. Here you can get there by bus or train. Particular attention should be paid to the old town upon arrival.

Religious attractions

There are no iconic features in Aachen. In fact, the city itself is one, as its architecture is mesmerizing, its cosy little streets allow for relaxation, and its various places to sample the local delicacies. Still, there are some must-see sights to see.

For a start, head to Aachen Cathedral. Over 30 monarchs have been crowned within its walls and 12 queens have been anointed. Within the cathedral grounds is the Palace Chapel. It was erected in 800. There is also a Gothic choir that dates back to the 14th century.

Special mention should be made of the decoration of the cathedral. There are bronze railings and elements of gold, as well as glass. All of this beauty is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Inside the cathedral is the burial place of Charlemagne. You can also see his throne made of white marble. There is also a cathedral treasury.

City decorations

Aachen has some interesting statues. Near the Carolingian cathedral, for example, is the Pupperbrunnen. It’s a water well that tells the story of the city. The streets are also decorated with original lanterns with street signs. The pavement is mostly paving stones, but there are also tiles and asphalt.

If you don’t feel like wandering around the city, or if the weather doesn’t permit, you can visit the local museums. There’s the Ludwig Forum for International Cooperation Kunst as well as the Sueurmont Ludwig Museum. Both will introduce you to the various novelties and tell you fascinating stories about the city.
